Understanding the Workings of a Siphonic Roof Drainage System

A roof drainage system is instrumental in enabling the flow of accumulated water from the roof and preventing seepage, water logging, etc. Conventionally, roof drainage systems are designed in a manner that there is a slope which takes the water to the lowest level, where a downpipe is positioned. This downpipe carries off the water from the roof to the ground, to a tank or a sewage line. However, traditional roof drainage systems have a fundamental problem in that they carry air along with water which prevents the system from functioning at full efficiency and only carries limited amount of water in the pipes. It is here that siphonic roof drainage systems serve advantageous.

In siphonic roof drainage systems, provision has been made to ensure that the downpipes can carry full load of water and not air. This is done by altering the design of the drainage system. An insert is included in the system through pipes of smaller diameters, which restricts and blocks the entry of air in the pipes, leading to negative pressure, and thereby ensuring smoother and faster flow of water down the pipes. The entire system of siphonic roof drainage has several collector pipes with the air-restricting function which together collect the rainwater which is accumulated in a tank at atmospheric pressure.

Installing a siphonic roof drainage system is much easier and also saves effort and energy. Since the pipes function at full capacity, fewer pipes are required for the complete drainage of even large areas. This also frees up the space on the roof, especially in the case of surface pipes. Given that the pipes are smaller in diameter as compared to pipes in conventional systems, siphonic roof drainage systems also require fewer materials for the installation of the complete network.

The design flexibility of siphonic roof drainage systems allows that the pipes can be situated anywhere on the building, bringing convenience. The installation is easy, does not necessarily have to be done underground and can be tailored for the specific design and requirements of the building. Additionally, siphonic roof drainage systems are also more eco-friendly, as they can be easily used to collect large amounts of water for recycling.
